[Geology2] Earthquake Alert System Could Be a Reality

Up to the minute advance warning before temblor.

By Chris Roberts - KNBC-TV Los Angeles
|  Wednesday, Nov 30, 2011  |  Updated 6:32 PM PST
Get out of town: earthquake's a-coming.

An alert for quakes akin to the ones for tsunamis, hurricanes, and fog is a dream as old as the 1868 Hayward earthquake -- but there are real-life 21st-century scientists working on such a device at this exact moment, and they promise that it's "close to reality," according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Brainboxes from the U.C. Berkeley Seismological Laboratory and the U.S. Geological Survey have devised a method to record p-waves, seismic shocks that preclude an earthquake by several seconds to up to a minute, according to the newspaper.

They don't predict quakes, per se -- as in they do not say, "these tectonic plates will slide and cause seismic activity Tuesday at 3 p.m." -- but they will give residents just enough time to dive under a table, avoid a pot of boiling water, or otherwise brace themselves for a quake, scientists say.

There's already a network of sensors in place along the West Coast which record seismic activity. Some are similar to a system that's been in place in Japan since the 1960s, where train systems are informed of quakes and shut down. BART is working on such a kill-switch right now, according to the newspaper.

A $6 million grant helped get this project
going; before, scientists worked on a "shoestring" budget, the newspaper reported.

I was down on the Navy docks loading food onto a ship when I saw the front coming in. It came in as a solid wall of fog, at first. Then it cleared up, but later has become what it is now...

Achtung Gruppe!

California is experiencing and will continue to experience powerful winds that look to get worse before they get better. This is happening at both ends of the state (and in the middle) all at once which is somewhat unusual. Typically we do not get Diablo Winds blowing concurrently with Santa Ana Winds let alone Mono Winds as well. All three are regional varieties of katabatic winds which California experiences this time of year but usually not all at once.

Although we have received some decent rains that have germinated grasses which are now greening, the old fuels, particularly dead fuels are still there and have dried out. The current winds are additionally curing the fuels and will continue to do so. Therefore, with any fire comes the possibility of a runaway fire be it structural or wildland or interface zone. In addition to the fire threat is the fact this statewide wind event is of unusual intensity and duration and non-fire damage is anticipated from the winds ripping at trees and man-made structures and high-profile vehicles as well as sand and dust storms being generated in certain locales. Please use due caution in all you do in all situations throughout the remainder of this week.

Beginning tomorrow morning I shall be in Santa Barbara helping a friend do the Gem Faire at the Earl Warren Showgrounds (feel free to stop by if you are in the area) and won't return home until this Sunday night. I shall be in the Rocks & Relics booth but during this time I will be limited in my internet access. I ask that our membership take up the slack in my absence and keep the home fires burning (poor choice of expression I know) and hold down the fort (might be necessary literally). Please post any info on significant wind damage and societal effects (like widespread power outages and road closures) as well as significant fire activity. I don't want just any fire activity but I mean the type that matters such as that threatens to burn or does burn structures or causes notable negative societal effects like evacuations or road closures or power outages or simply gets really large even if in an unpopulated region.

Additionally, God forbid anything interesting happens I recommend our members take photos of any such that they do witness. Anything worth posting on the group albums please do so. Also, I invite our members to check out the cool photos already there of past events, mostly fires. Also, now that I'm blogging daily I'd be interested in my blog guess-hosting some of the better images you take be they of fires or duststorms or sandstorms or downed trees or power poles or pylons or anything else. If I elect to use one or more of your images you shall receive full attribution and you will retain all rights to your own images. However, on my blog they will stand a good chance of being seen by a much larger audience than merely Yahoo Groups.

[Geology2] Project Helps Clean Water Runoff from La Brea Tar Pits

LA's board of supervisors voted to allocate $2 million to create the system

By Reanna Delgadillo - KNBC-TV Los Angeles
|  Tuesday, Nov 29, 2011  |  Updated 6:10 PM PST
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved the construction of a new system that will help purify water runoff from the La Brea Tar Pits into the storm drains.

There are temporary systems in place to separate oil from the tar pits from the water at a lake on Wilshire Boulevard in front of the Page Museum. Yet in times of major rains, these systems cannot handle all the water.

Last week, the board of supervisors voted to allocate $2 million to create a permanent solution in cleaning the water.

"This (money) will come from funds set aside in the budget in the Capital Project," said Kerjon Lee, an LA County Public Works spokesman.

Lee said a temporary fix has been in place to address water runoff that has happened since 2006.

The system included six above-ground pumps that would collect and retain water over a period of time, and as needed, the county would empty the batch and purify it, according to Lee.

The new system will include an underground vault where water is collected then travels through a clarifier that will remove minerals and other impurities.

Lee said the pipeline will be directly connected from the campus of the museum and will continue into the sanitary sewer system.

Asphalt and oil is a reoccurring issue in the Hancock Park area, not just at the La Brea Tar Pits, according to Lee.

"We have water quality measures in the drain systems," Lee said.

One such measure includes the oil absorbent boom which acts "like a sock that lines the bottom of the storm drains and absorbs the oil, according to Lee.

He said the new underground pipeline will be completed by next spring. The Department of Public Works assisted with the temporary system and will be creating and installing the new one.

An area that is sometimes affected by contaminants in the water is Ballona Creek, which travels through the Los Angeles Basin.

Jim Lamm, president of the Ballona Creek Renaissance, a non-profit organization working towards renewing the creek, said there is a big increase of water pollutants during the winter storm season.

Lamm said this new system will be "significant" in helping to keep the pollutants separate from the water.

He said that at a recent cleanup of the creek after a day of rain, an oil slick was spotted by a volunteer.

"Most of the time, what we are seeing is trash, which is sometimes laden with other pollutants," Lamm said. "I was never specifically aware of the oil (from the tar pits) going into the creek."

There have been three oil spills into the creek in the last 10 years, according to Lamm.

The cities of LA County all have mandates to comply with and this new filtration system will add to the efforts, he said.

Lamm said there is a "trash net" that catches material before entering the ocean, but the net is not the solution.

"People are dismissing (the new system)," Lamm said. "But before people came, the tar pits were there and it was not as beseeched as it is now."

Lamm said when it comes to clean water "every little bit helps."
