A geologist's view of the Hingol Island

Hingol, Balochistan: A soft muddy island appeared a few kilometers offshore in Hingol on the Makran coast, Balochistan on November 16, 2010. The Director General, Geological Survey of Pakistan (GSP) dispatched a team of earth scientists to investigate the sudden appearance of this white mud dome, about three kilometres offshore near the Kund Malir beach.

The island is 90 metres high with a span of approximately three kilometers.

Before the upsurge of sludge, local fishermen reported high tides near the coast and several boats were trapped due to the emergence of this mud volcano from nowhere.  Another island of similar nature was also reported to have appeared 12 years ago. That island disappeared into the sea after four months. It is inferred that this mud dome which is given the name of Khizr, will also disappear with passage of time when methane and other gases are released from this structure.

The pictures taken by GSP earth scientists during their field investigations shows the eruption of white hot muddy sludge on top of the island. The ejected material is a sludge of fine solids, hydrate-bearing sediments suspended in acidic water and hydrocarbon fluids.

This mud dome seems to be formed by geo-excreted liquids and methane gas when hot water mixes with mud and surface deposits. Mud volcanoes are associated with subduction zones and the Makran coastal area is in close vicinity of triple junction where three major tectonic plates – namely Eurasian, Arabian and Indian plates meet.

Mud volcanoes are not true magmatic volcanoes.They are like steam-vents erupting pressurised gases and the strength of their eruption is quite diverse. It may be a result of a cone-like structure created by pressurised mud diaper or salt dome, which breaches the earth's surface or ocean bottom.

Mud volcanoes along tectonic subduction zone may be indicative of petroleum products. These mud domes tend to start out as small bulges in the earth which develop into cones.

The bulge is created by a build-up of pressure underneath relatively plastic rock. Areas of increased tectonic activity are frequent sites for mud volcanoes. More than 80 active mud volcanoes have been identified on the Makran coast; there are about 10 locations in Hingol and Hinglaj area having clusters of mud volcaones.

One of the highest and biggest mud volcanos in the world, Chandragup – means moon volcano – is located in close proximity. It is 125 metres high and more the 450 metres wide. Such type of mud volcanoes are associated with active subduction zones and tectonic forces and large sedimentary deposits create these geological formations.

Mud volcanoes sometimes temporarily emerge due to earthquakes but the mechanism by which earthquakes trigger changes in submarine mud extrusions are not completely understood.

An earthquake may have resulted in mud flow and release of methane and hydrogen sulfide gases which can cause the volcano to flare. On 28 November, 1945 during M8 great Makran Earthquake, which also generated a tsunami, a light was reportedly seen over the Chanay mountain in the direction of Hinglaj and fell on the sea, burning for about three days in two parts. Interestingly enough, an earthquake of 5.1 magnitude was recorded the in the area on the 16th November, 2010.

The geological field investigation for the emergence of Arabian Sea Sapt Island (ARSSI) revealed that the island is located 17 km from the Wad Bandar and 3.2 km from the Chadman coast. The island is spread over an area of 0.8 Sq. km and its height is 35 meters above sea level. There are five vents on the island which are still active and erupting mud with pressure. Methane gas emitted out from the vent-2 is highly flammable while vent-3 mostly reacts after four minutes with sound and pressure and mud is flown in the air up-to 15 meters.

Azerbaiijan and its Caspian coastline are home to nearly 400 mud volcanoes. While mud volcanoes found in Andaman Island, India; Taman Peninsula of Russia and Kerch Peninsula and Ukarine are sometimes used for recreation, this is not advisable with Makran coast mud volcanoes due to the unpredictability of ongoing seismic activity and sudden eruptions.

Other fault lines are likely to be more stressed than the one that produced the fatal rupture 17 kilometres underground.

Scientists now have their work cut out trying to understand why it was this fault that resulted in Tuesday's devastating quake – and what risks have been created in other already stressed areas.

GNS Science natural hazards manager Kelvin Berryman said the magnitude 6.3 earthquake was an aftershock of the Darfield quake, although it was on a different fault line.

Aftershocks had been spreading both east and west from Darfield since September 4, increasing the stresses in the earth's crust in the Canterbury region – and creating "clouds" of aftershocks at both ends of the main fault rupture.

GNS Seismologist Bill Fry said scientists were trying to understand why the fault which ruptured to produce Tuesday's fatal earthquake had become so stressed. "This certainly wasn't one of the most stressed areas."

When fault lines rupture, the stress is dislocated and spreads out to other faults, which pose varying risks of also splitting and producing more earthquakes.

However, calculations done after September 4 had not shown the area where last week's earthquake occurred to be high risk, Dr Fry said.

Seismologists wanted to understand more about the mechanics of Tuesday's 6.3 quake and what impact it could have on other faults – particularly those already believed to be very stressed after the Darfield event.

"A lot of our efforts are going into understanding this problem."

One area which had been identified as particularly stressed had been Hororata on the Canterbury plains, which had had aftershocks since September 4.

Scientists were also working on understanding why Tuesday's earthquake produced ground shaking or acceleration at 1.88 times the force of gravity, which Dr Fry said was "extremely high" for the magnitude.

However, its shallow depth in soft soils would have contributed, as would the possibility that "seismic waves" reflected off Banks Peninsula and bounced back to Christchurch.

GNS Science geologist Hamish Campbell said the earthquake's hypocentre – the location beneath the earth – could have been as shallow as three to five kilometres.

Its source was about half way between Lyttelton and Sumner, right under the north portal to the tunnel.

The 17km-long rupture along the fault plane was on a very steep angle, beginning at a depth of 3km and ending 12km underground.

The fault was effectively "blind" because it could not be seen on the ground's surface, and while it did not connect with the Greendale fault, it was part of the same system of faults which ran in the same east-west direction, Dr Campbell said.

Dr Berryman said geologists had suspected for some time that there were buried and unrecognised faults in Canterbury.

Some may have not moved for many thousands of years, but had been reactivated as stresses in the earth's crust had been redistributed since September.

Many geologists believed that modern-day tectonic plate motions in the South Island had reawakened some of these very old faults, causing them to fail. The Greendale fault that ruptured in September's quake was one of these very old faults, he said.

LOL If you read that article closely, the source of all that clatter came from Utah, and boy, has it ever turned over a hornet's nest... as it should. I hope someone tracks these cowards down and exposes them for who they are... personages, that is. I haven't seen this much of a hoorah against anything in quite a while... wait... Kim just posted on Cal. Disasters about the world coming to an end on May 21st. 'Fraid we're neck and neck now on the insanity factor. Iran, Utah, and now N. Carolina? What's the freaking world coming to?

My mother's ancestors came to California by covered wagon over the Sierra Nevada in the summer of 1847, a few months after the Donner Party tragedy. They settled in the vast Sacramento Valley in what is now Colusa County and tried to build a future along the fertile banks of the Sacramento River.

About 13 years later, they took refuge on the nearby Sutter Buttes because of one of the worst floods ever to hit California.

Many years ago, my grandmother, Frances Graham, passed along this bit of family folklore to me from her mother about a deluge of biblical proportions that occurred in 1862.

The flood devastated their farm. She said it was like nature taking revenge for the hydraulic mining that took place during the California Gold Rush. Many called this flood the "Noachian deluge of California Floods."

Toward the end of 1861, a series of storms produced nearly continuous rain that lasted through February over most of California.

Los Angeles recorded nearly 36 inches of rain while Sonora in the Sierra Nevada foothills measured more than 100 inches!

By February 1862, the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys became almost an inland sea stretching nearly 300 miles in length, forcing the state capital in Sacramento to move to San Francisco.

In addition, the normally salty waters in San Francisco and San Pablo Bay became nearly fresh with a continuous and nearly unimaginably heavy flow of silted water through the Golden Gate.

The Santa Ana River in Southern California became a raging torrent, laying waste to farms along its banks. River settlements throughout California were inundated.

Of course no one alive today witnessed this terrible series of storms, and weather data from so long ago is sparse.

However, a few weather experts believe that atmospheric rivers stretching across the Pacific Ocean channel vast amounts of water vapor from near the equator into large storms coming out of the Gulf of Alaska.

Atmospheric river-transported moisture from a weakening typhoon in the Western Pacific significantly enhanced the storm that struck San Luis Obispo County with record amounts of rainfall Oct. 13-14, 2009. This condition is also sometimes called the Pineapple Express.

After Hurricane Katrina, concern about widespread flooding in parts of the nation became heightened, especially with climate change.

In January, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the California Emergency Management Agency convened the ARkStorm Summit.

A team of federal, state, academic and business experts attended the event to consider emergency planning if another storm of this magnitude was to hit.

On This Date In California Weather History....

2001: A thunderstorm produced dime size hail in Mira Mesa.
Eight inches of graupel (soft hail) piled up on I-15 there causing immense traffic delays.
Several funnel clouds were observed in Escondido.
A waterspout was observed ten miles west of San Diego - Lindbergh Field.
It snowed 12 inches at Palomar Mountain, the greatest daily snowfall on record for February.
This also occurred on 2.13.1973 and 2.19.1962.

2000: A line of severe thunderstorms spawns four F0 tornadoes and three episodes of 3/4-inch hail across western and central Fresno and Madera counties.
The hail caused a multiple car accident on Highway 99 in Madera County.
These were the last tornadoes to hit the Central California Interior in the 20th Century.
1.87 inch of rain fell at the Fresno Yosemite Airport, for the wettest day in February at Fresno.

1996: A storm that started on 2.25 and ended on 2.28 produced 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rainfall in coastal areas.
Snowfall of ten inches was recorded at Idyllwild, two inches in Yucaipa and even a dusting in Hemet and Corona.
One to two feet of snow fell in the higher mountains and up to six inches fell in the high desert.

1991: Several multi-vehicle pile-ups occurred on Highway 58 about 4 miles east of Bakersfield due to near zero visibility from blowing dust.
The largest involved 70 vehicles and resulted in 36 injuries, 8 of which were serious.

1991: A series of storms that started on this day and ended on 3.1 produced three to six inches of rainfall at lower elevations and 11 to 14 inches of precipitation in the mountains. Two died and six were injured.
Hazards included urban flooding, mudslides, and road washouts.
Flood waters were five feet deep at Desert Hot Springs.
Two to three feet of snow were dumped on the Big Bear area and up to two feet fell elsewhere in the mountains.
Highways were closed.

1989: It was 95° in Borrego Springs, the highest temperature on record for February.

1988:
Gusty southeast winds caused minor damage to an aircraft and other structures at the Chowchilla Airport.

1986: It was 99° in Palm Springs, the highest temperature on record for February.
This also occurred on 2.26.1986.

1983: Heavy rain that started on 2.24 and ended on 2.28 brought extensive street flooding.
Damage was done to 30 cars and an apartment building in Anaheim.

1962: The morning low at Truckee was -23.
The low at Portola was -20, and at Tahoe City the low was -10.

1957: A heavy rainstorm drenched the Southland.
Burn areas from fires the previous November in the San Bernardino foothills led to severe debris flows and flash floods into Highland.
A block of homes were inundated as well as most of a school grounds.
City Creek ran black from ash and soot.

1955: 25.0 inches of snow fell at Truckee, with 15.0 inches of snow being reported at Glenbrook.

1951: It snowed 1.5 inches in Victorville, the greatest daily snowfall on record for February.

1938: Storms of tropical origin that started on this day ended on 3.4.
One was killed by lightning in Corona.
11.06 inches of rain fell at LA.
More than 30 inches fell at several mountain stations of the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains (32.2 inches at 8,300 feet elev.).
More than 22 inches fell in the Santa Ana River headwaters.
Considerable snow was melted, adding to the runoff.
This led to unprecedented flood control efforts, including a network of dams and canals and concrete channels.
For the storm 210 were reported dead or missing in flooding across Southern California, 45 in Orange County, of which 43 perished in Mexican-American Atwood from an eight-foot wall of water.
Hundreds were injured.
The Santa Ana River flooded, inundating nearly all of northern Orange County.
Catastrophic damage hit more than 1,500 residences.
400 cabins and buildings were washed away in and around San Antonio Canyon.
The Whitewater River flooded, isolating Palm Springs.

1891: Heavy rains over two weeks caused immense damage in San Diego and catastrophic damage in Tijuana.
The worst was flooding along the Tijuana River where all structures were swept away and a man was killed.
Three prospectors died at Table Mountain in Baja California.
