This fierce 1882 tornado not only took a roof off but carried a hen house for three miles
The following story is from the Red Bluff Tocain(?) newspaper dated Oct. 7, 1882:
"Harry DeGas, who came down from Anderson Sunday, gives us the following picture of a fierce tornado which visited that section of Shasta County last week: Last Thursday about noon a fierce tornado visited a district about three miles west of Anderson which did considerable damage. It began its fury at Keith's residence, where it first raised the well curb from its location and lifted it about 100 feet in the air. A few seconds afterwards it took the roof off his kitchen and carried it some distance. After a little pause it took his hen house up bodily and carried it about three miles from his place. The course of the tornado was west, and in its course trees several feet in diameter were mowed down close to the ground. Hundreds of cords of wood which were piled in its course were scattered broadcast, and when it struck a ravine in the mountains, where it spent its fury, the roar and noise was deafening. The ravine was thickly wooded, but now not a vestige of shrubbery is left."
