[californiadisasters] List-Owner's Mid-Year Message
2010 has reached its midway point and California has thus far been very fortunate to be in a temporary disaster lull.
Other than the M7.2 El Mayor-Cucapah Quake down by the border this past Easter Sunday things have been fairly quiet.
The California Coast did get some of the energy from the Pacific-wide tsunami generated by the Great Chilean mega-thrust quake several months ago but only minor damage was sustained by some marina facilities and boats.
The much-feared El Nino of last Winter/Spring brought above-average precipitation to much of NorCal but the further south from there the closer to average the precipitation levels were overall. San Diego County came in being about average.
Consequently, there were not very many storm-related casualties or much storm-related damage.
Given how late California saw fairly regular rainfall (BTW, we start a new rainfall measuring period today) the fuel moisture levels have remained very mild for the Spring into Summer time period this year and hence fire activity has been much more mild than we have seen in a number of years.
However, the biomass growing atop California is either seasonally dead or dying with the balance drying out with all the seasonal winds we are getting along with the seasonal end of the rain along with the long days and high-angle sunlight we are getting this time of year. Therefore it is only a matter of time until our fire season breaks forth in typical California fury.
Remember, even an average fire season in California nowadays is worse than used to be the case.
For those newer members who have not been here long enough to see how we operate over the arc of time from times of quietude like now to times of adversity such as during a major regional fire siege it is important that you understand that when things are temporarily quiet like now we like to post articles about and anniversaries for past disasters and articles about recent scientific discoveries and future hazards.
When the you-know-what is hitting the fan we switch to a Code 33 footing wherein group posting traffic is restricted to just the ongoing emergency or any newly emerging ones.
During those busy periods for regular traffic or extended discussions or slightly off-topic traffic we encourage you to post on the sister group California Disasters Discussion Group.
During quiet periods like now we use that group for fully off-topic or extended discussions started on the main group.
I do not allow the discussion group to get too quiet but post interesting things there that are relevant but not quite worthy of the main group during the lulls in disaster activity.
I invite all members here to join that group and over 400 of you here are already members of the discussion group.
Please be careful out there this Independence Day holiday weekend.
The roads will be treacherous, people will get hurt and some even die, some while driving and others while playing in the waterways or on the sand dunes and other off-road venues as happens each and every year of our modern civilization.
There will be innumerable sources of ignition in and adjacent to the wildlands as people barbecue or smoke or ride their off-road vehicles or stay home and work and make sparks with grinders and mowers and such.
At all times use due caution and anticipate what could go wrong in what you or others are doing before you or they do it and take proper precautions including perhaps not doing it at all.
Everybody stay safe out there now, ya heah?
