It is not unusual, and is to be expected, that there will be differences in early reports for a variety of reasons, including the location of a specific quake, the variable amount of monitoring equipment that may or may not be in the general area, and other factors. Ultimately readings from various locations near and far (far!) will be compiled into one “official” number for a specific quake, but that takes time to sort out.
I just came in from a meeting and haven’t looked at any of the official reports yet, but aftershocks can generate their own aftershocks, too, so it’s also at least possible that there’s been more than one event.
Also, folks, please understand this was just a teaser……. especially compared with what the SoCal region is really facing.
