Over the years I’ve seen many people sort of romanticize the idea of earthquakes and/or other disasters, and/or have a sort of thrill-seeking mind-set. As long as an event doesn’t pass a certain “forgiveness threshold”, it may be easy to view such thinking as “harmless”. But here’s the rub: Even people who think more soberly about quake threats often just don’t have an accurate concept of how the equation can change. Almost everyone tends to very seriously underestimate the force changes that are involved in truly hard hits. For instance, the g forces in the Big One, for a person directly on top of the fault, can catapult a human body in the air, instantaneously, by about 20 feet, much like an explosion. And yes, while the seismologists live here too because that’s what they do, such an event will not be a
Also, some of the comments here reminded me that a few decades ago, there was a popular song about people who headed to CA for opportunities, wide-eyed and filled with hope, only to end up “parking cars and pumping gas”. Those jobs are now gone, too. The state has cut, and must cut, social services as well, so there will be little fall back aid if any, for people who arrive here without a plan and a job. It could end up being a very personal disaster.
In short, I am among those who wish you well, but who would also urge you to slow down and think things through. An accurate “size-up” is valuable principle to apply for both disaster response and for personal life decisions.

That's how things got as Rick describes them; people coming out here for
"the dream". Started during the Dust Bowl. Read the book or watch the movie
of Grapes of Wrath.
During WWII, those coming had jobs awaiting. They were the ones who built
modern SoCal, and it was great while they controlled it.
Rick gave you good advice; take it.

Things may look 'bad', but that doesn't stop me. I don't have to be rich to
move
out there. Somehow I know it will work out for me as bad as I want it.

While I haven’t been to
phrase
“All that glitters…” I’ve been many places in the country, my eyes are
always
open, looking for another place to live.
If you’re just starting out, CA is WAY expensive (mostly housing and energy
costs) and the job market is MUCH tighter than the rest of the country. I’m
not
saying don’t come on in, but do your research about CA, get your education
elsewhere (and a job before you arrive) and you’ll be ahead of the game
(upper
level schools are in the tens of thousands of dollars here, lower level
schools
are broke). Many of us are thinking about leaving CA. It’s too crowded,
too
broken and the AI (arse vent index) is too high (more so in SoCal, but it’s
spread north into OR and WA too). Of course if you’re independently
wealthy…

I know there are interesting rocks around here. I did not mean that
everything
was literally only sand and seashells. I just want to feel earthquakes. I've
been to So Cal once and next time, I will be there for good. I appreciate
your
message and I am interested in the study of rocks and plate tectonics in
general. I appreciate the whole Earth. Please understand that I have a
certain
place I belong. I collected rocks I found here in
parents even found a massive fossilized coral chunk 2 summers ago. I didn't
mean
to complain about where I am so much. I'm just itching to move to southern
temblor
in southern
crazy!!!
