Re: [californiadisasters] Re: Batten Down Your Hatches!

Public Resources Code section 4291
The distance may be determined by local authorities and may be to the property line.  That allows factoring in slope, aspect, fuel types etc.

Blame the typos on the iPhone. It's awkward to type on one.

Most jurisidictions in CA I know of recommend if not outright require defensible space.... I know up here in SLO County most municipalities will mow your flash fuels for you if you do not and then tack that expense onto your property tax..... CalFire recommends 100 feet but I'm not sure if they actually enforce it as opposed to merely recommending it....

Ya can't fix stupid. One thing I will give kudos to my home state is that in the area known as the Pine Barrens you MUST create defensible spaces in the UWI zone. Its inspected and unless you meet the requirements you won't be able to buy fire insurance for the property.

In one community over 100 houses burned and only one house survived. Why did the one house survive? The owner had, in violation of the law, removed vegetation close to his home. He had been prosecuted by the state government and fined over A$100,000.00.

A minor change and it only took the loss of 173 lives and over 2000 houses for the politicians to act.
