Re: [californiadisasters] Current Road Closures/Weather Reports Per CHP CAD

First time out on my learner's permit in Upstate NY, it was snowing. Didn't
phase either my father or me. Turning into a skid is completely automatic.*
Only one of my children has ever driven in snow or been trained by
experience to handle a skid (she had skidpan training before spending a
winter in MN). For me it was a common thing.

And back in NY we had idiots, but usually they learned something while
sitting stuck in a snowbank or underneath a tractor-trailer. SoCal-ians can
go years without suffering from their idiocy.

(BTW, I don't miss the cold or snow [or people or politics] AT ALL. In 26
years, I've been to the snow once, and that was when the kids were little so
that they could experience it.)

------------------
* Once, upon crowning a hill and suddenly going from dry road to
zero-visibility snow and slipping, I started skidding and reactively turned
into the skid. Then as I was starting to correct, I realized, "Hey, this new
car is front-wheel-drive." I put on a little gas, which was so effective
that I went from 60 degrees of the road one way to 60 degrees the other way
before I could straighten the wheels, then quickly back to the correct
orientation and continued on. It was a two-lane country road, so I'd have
been in a world of hurt if there'd been any other traffic, but I just went
on, howbeit with a slightly elevated pulse. BTW, this was on Michelin
radials, not snow tires--nobody much uses them anymore.
