RE: [Geology2] Though the Earth Be Moved--Video Footage of the Damage in Alaska, March 27, 1964

Not a lot left to see.  One partial cabin from near Girdwood is still there (the epicenter), but they moved both Girdwood and Valdez, yes the entire towns, what was left of them.  Both were built on mudflats (close to the water, gold rush era), now they’re a bit more on solid ground.  Both towns are rebuilt and doing great (Anchorage is the largest city and has the usual city problems including city driving habits, drugs and alcohol issues).  They’ve recovered.

Honestly, except for the human loss of life, the Exxon Valdez FUBAR was a greater disaster.  There is still residue from that and the sea critters haven’t quite returned in strength.  Turn over some rocks, you find oil/sludge.  And the sea otters, on their way back from hunted extinction, are now suffering from a strange disease that affects their brains (no not zombie-ism).  Once afflicted, it’s 100% fatal.

PS Girdwood is now known for skiing and the daily bore tide (the only wave you can surf in town).  But sadly, it is infected with yuppies.  I did shop at one store called “The Tourist Trap” because it seemed an honest name.  ;-)

I'll bet it is. It's on the bucket list. For sure.
