[californiadisasters] On This Date In CA Weather History (May 24)



1996: A cold storm system came from the north and produced thunderstorms.
Streets were buried in pea-size hail in Fallbrook.
"Ping pong size" hail also fell there.
Lightning strikes were common.
Crop damage occurred around
Fallbrook from the hail.
Lightning struck two palm trees in Oceanside and burned like torches.
Power was knocked out in the north county.

1995: A dry microburst hit Ridgecrest downing telephone lines and street signs, blowing out store windows, ripping awnings of mobile homes and demolishing a storage shed.

1960: An 8.5 magnitude earthquake (moment magnitude 9.5) hit Chile.
Waves eight feet above normal hit San Diego.
Docks were destroyed near Point Loma and extensively damaged throughout the harbor from tide currents estimated at 20-25 knots.

1960: 6.0 inches of snow fell at Donner Memorial State Park.

1916: Latest in the season measurable snow has fallen at Yosemite Valley, 0.5" measured.
