Re: [Geology2] Helium Shortage Threatens More Than Balloons

So, the government is behind the price hike and there isn't any substantial evidence that there IS a Helium shortage; it's just that the government now has to drill for it in hard to procure places and pay a premium for it.  By dumping reserves and flooding the market, creating a cheap product, the future of many industries will be compromised. An example: due to shortsightedness, health care will now rise (again!) because MRI's depend on Helium to function and that Helium has to be replaced every few months.

Gads. What a fracking mess.

UNBELIVEABLE!

Who created the nation's helium problem by wasting a scarce resource?

Are these the same who insist no one needs to worry about climate change ruining the earth?

The "Helium Privatization" mandate to empty the reserve, which had operated near Amarillo since 1925, actually occurred during the Clinton administration.

A large chunk of the increase in cost in the last decade has to do with the price of energy to purify it. There are new sources in the Middle East, but the production cost for the U.S. now must include transportation. Algeria has become the second leading producer. Helium is a by-product of oil and gas production.
