The bridge is classified as "fracture critical," which means it lacks redundancy and one big structural failure can bring the whole thing down (from the Federal National Bridge Inventory). Sort of like the Titanic. Wait till the big one happens in Washington. From what I understand many bridges in WA are similar.

We lost a bridge here in Reno the same way - 10 tons of strawberries in the trailer on a 5-ton limit bridge...folks were picking strawberries out of the Truckee river with fishing nets, colanders, etc for hours

Paso Robles, CASo I head off for a 3-hour CERT class and this is what I miss: a M5.6 - 5.9 earthquake in Plumas County with no injuries or appreciable damage and the southbound I-5 bridge over the Skagit River in Washington State gets knocked down as a result of a truck with an over-sized load striking girders and for some reason that causing the entire bridge to collapse yet without any fatalities thankfully enough. Heads up next Thursday night when I'm in CERT class again!Kim Patrick Noyes
