I’m on the north side (up above) the Cummings valley of Tehachapi. We have a “notch” in the mountains that gives us a pretty good distant view of the Grapevine and Frazier Mt. area from here. That’s about a 30 mile line of sight. I’m seeing active flame on the mountain easily with the unaided eye…mostly at the upper elevations of the mountains. With binoculars, you can see smaller hotspots and spot fires further down in elevation and the smoke still blowing off to the east (probably into the Antelope Valley).
If I had to make a guess, I would say that’s much more than 3,000 acres…more like 5-8,000 acres (at least of what I can see from here). Hopefully, the fire will lay down as the night goes on more. We are expecting a cold front in Thursday night (NOAA), and some rain. That might help if the winds don’t get too bad and there’s not lightning involved.
