Their concern was based upon the trajectory of the fire earlier today to the west-northwest, NOT westward or west-southwestward. As this fire works its way at all north of west it is rising in elevation and getting into terrain with greater relief. In that situation when there is an absence of prevailing easterly winds through the Banning Pass the terrain could potentially pull the fire up

Quite unlikely it would make a run up into the San Bernardino Mtns. With an offshore flow and stronger northeast Santa Ana winds expected, this fire would move in a southwesterly direction towards the 10 and away from the SBD Mtns, but as always worthy of keeping an eye on.
