Dan,
My perception of things is that with budget cuts since the advent of the fiscal crisis starting in 2007 there has been less code enforcement for fire code violations on most levels of governmental jurisdiction. Therefore your observation comes as no surprise. I'm glad things didn't turn out worse there today and you and your's have been safe in both recent fires.

This was just up the street from me. The Santa Ana winds kicked in early this morning. I was concerned it would spread though a sector of older, densely overgrown homes. It could have been a lot worse.
Then strong winds blew some embers that started a spot fire several hundred yards downwind in an overgrown backyard with a lot of junk. A crew got on that immediately and knocked it down.
This is the second time recently that a fire nearby burned across an open field and spread to houses on the downwind side. There is no fire marshal enforcing weed clearance around the field perimeters.
