10/26/2013 | 0730 | Seven years ago today at 07:57am, the word came off the mountain of trapped firefighters at the Esperanza Fire. Soon thereafter on that eventful October 26, 2006 date, we learned that five valiant USFS San Bernardino National Forest firefighters off Engine 57 were overrun by fire at 15400 Gorgonio View Drive south of Banning. This is the 7th anniversary of the deaths and a date we will always remember and respect in honor of our firefighter brothers. The fire took the lives of USFS Captain Mark Loutzenhiser, 43, from Idyllwild, California, Fire Engine Operator Jess "Gus" McLean, 27, from Beaumont, California, Assistant Fire Engine Operator Jason McKay, 27, from Apple Valley, California, Firefighter Pablo Cerda, 23, from Fountain Valley, California and Firefighter Daniel Hoover-Najera, 20, from San Jacinto, California. |

10/26/2013 | 0700 | For the Cedar Fire anniversary, no Santa Ana winds are predicted despite warmer temperatures expected heading into the weekend The Cedar fire, still the largest firestorm in California history, began the afternoon of October 25th in the Cleveland National Forest east of Ramona during the fire's peak, it consumed 80,000 acres in just 10 hours in all, 273,246 acres burned by the time the blaze was over. More than 2,200 homes were destroyed by the Cedar fire alone and 15 people lost their lives. |
