I watched the start of this from my house in Irvine. Incredible to
watch. There was no doubt in my mind from watching the first puff of
smoke that there was nothing to stop this fire from roaring all the way
through Laguna Beach to the ocean. The wind was fiercely blowing; there
were no fire breaks. The environmentalists had stopped the toll road
that would have served as a wide firebreak. The environmentalists had
also stopped the construction of a reservoir on the top of the 'Top of
the World' in Laguna Beach, so they literally ran out of water to fight
the fire when it engulfed the city. My friends saved their house by
sneaking past the police lines, returned to find their porch on fire,
found no water pressure available, but were able to douse it with a
plastic gallon jug of water.
