The epic Rim Fire may have changed summers forever for some children. The fire is fully contained now, but over the last couple of months, flames wreaked havoc on various Bay Area summer camps.

Berkeley's Tuolumne Family Camp was destroyed by the fire. The Friends of Berkeley Tuolumne Camps said contractors have completed erosion control and testing for hazardous materials at the campsite. They are working on a development plan to submit to the U.S. Forest Service this fall. Until then, they are looking into a number of possible temporary sites for next summer's camp.

Part of the San Jose Family Camp was also destroyed by the fire, but the city said the camp will be ready to resume this summer. In fact, registration is set to open in December.

In addition, San Francisco is hopeful it will be able to reopen Camp Mather this summer.

The Rim Fire started Aug. 17 and took two-and-a-half months to fully contain. It burned more than 257,000 acres and destroyed 112 buildings.
