A magnitude-5.7 earthquake struck 17 miles west of Petrolia at 1:08 p.m., according to USGS. It was followed by at least 13 aftershocks over the afternoon and into this evening, with the largest so far being a 3.1.Moderate to light shaking was reported up and down the North Coast, with the USGS recording responses from areas as far away Brookings, Oregon, and Ukiah. There are no reports of damage or injuries, according to Lt. Wayne Hanson of the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office.
The USGS aftershock warning states that: "At this time (immediately after the mainshock) the probability of a strong and possibly damaging aftershock in the next 7 days is approximately 40 percent." The chances of
earthquakes larger than the mainshock are small, approximately 5 to 10 percent, the USGS states.
Humboldt State University Geology professor Lori Dengler described the temblor as a "garden variety, Mendocino Fault earthquake," adding that the area has well-documented tectonic activity. The magnitude of the quake could change in the next few days, as seismologist have time to review it, but likely won't vary much from the current magnitude-5.7.
"It's a great reminder to be prepared," she said.
