Mississippi River Flooding Situation Report #1 (Jan 1st)
Highlights:
· As of Thursday, Dec 31st there are 336 river gauges above flood stage, mainly in the central and southeastern United States, with 37 at major flood stage.
· Major flooding is occurring or forecast on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers with record flooding at several locations.
· The floodwaters are expected to move downstream over next couple of weeks with significant river flooding for lower Mississippi into mid-January.
· As of Dec. 31st there has been 27 Storm related fatalities.
· In Illinois a temporary levee in Green County failed; up to 20 homes may be affected, no reported life/safety issues.
· In Missouri evacuations occurred in West Alton (near St Louis) (est. pop 522) due to an over topping levee. Evacuations also occurred in Valley Park due to flooding on the Meramec River.
· Missouri has closed 302 roads statewide due to flooding.
· The High Ridge Water Treatment Plant (Jefferson County, MO) has been inundated in flooding.
· Mandatory evacuations are in effect for levee protected areas at the lower end of Valley Park, MO (pop 7k).
· Volunteers and St. Louis City, MO staff shoveled 630 tons of sand into 36,000 sandbags and built a sandbag wall along 1,200 feet of the River Des Peres between Morgan Ford and Alabama to hold back rising floodwaters.
· The Illinois and Missouri Governors have declared States of Emergency.
· The Illinois State EOC remains activated at Level III (Partial Activation).
· The Missouri State EOC has been fully activated.
· The Mississippi and Tennessee State EOCs have been partially activated.
· A State of Emergency has been declared in Mississippi and Alabama.
· FEMA Region 5 Watch Center is at enhanced watch and a Liaison Officer has been deployed to the Illinois State EOC.
· The FEMA Region 7 Response Coordination Center is activated to Level 3 (Day-shift only) and the Regional Watch Center is at Enhanced Watch. A FEMA Liaison Officer is located at the Missouri State EOC.
· The FEMA National Watch Center is at Enhanced Watch.
