Unfortunately, Japan is also woefully short of natural resources and had to find ways of developing their own power generation methods while reducing its dependency upon oil which it imports 100%. While the citizens still protest military use of nuclear power and wish to deny port calls of US nuclear powered ships and subs, they had tried to harness the same energy source to provide basic electricity to their homes and trains and brightly light up their metropolitan areas. Ironically, the nuclear powered aircraft carrier, the USS Ronald Reagan, is one of the vessels tasked with providing assistance in the area.

And one thing more about nuclear power: Note that Japan is big on nuclear
power, and if there's any country that would be expected to shy from it, it
would be the only country in history ever to be hit with atomic bombs.
