Then you broke the law or rather that service station allowed you to break the law so the error was there's. I was last in Oregon about a year before your 1996 visit and it was definitely still a no-no to pump your own fuel there.
No, 1996 on my way to Washington state. Drove a 15ft Ryder truck, towing my car behind me. Stopped off for gas along I-5 corridor.
