Butte is a funny word. When I was about 14 we went to the Grand Canyon... the restaurant there offered a "Big Butte Salad" so I asked in all seriousness for the "Big Butt Salad"...lol. Allison

Mark a better version is "totally knackered".  Bit like me really.  Friday was my degree ceremony.  Presentation was made by Lord Putnam (Chariots of fire  etc) at the Barbican in London.  Fantastic day for me and the hundreds of other grads.  Had my family there and afterwards took them out for a pub carvery in Essex.  Almost tempted to carry on and do oceanography  and Global warming but do not think the brain could cope with it

 

I do some work with a primary school science/maths class.  Year 6.  In UK that is the final year before they go on to high school.  One young lad is a keen  geologist.  I had to tell him what buttes and messa were.  Told him that I thought Butte was an Americanism  and most examples captured in pictures etc  were in the States.  Perfect examples of them and plateaus were in Utah Monument valley.  I explained what the features were and how mesa became worn into Buttes.  Then he asked me where the asteroid belt was. He thought it was next to the earth.  I assured him that it was not and was further out in space and I would bring him in a book I have with its location explained

 

Btw I tried to joke with him and tell him Butte was Australian for a great beer but he did not get it.  10/11 year olds do not really get jokes like that

Lol, yes the English language can get confusing! I don't envy foreign people trying to learn it.

 

My 'end' is England (and to coin an English expression, I was 'knackered' when I sent the e-mail, lol).
