Hi Roger. Congrats on your degree.
Yeah 'totally knackered' is an expression I have also used and often it describes me too, lol.
Although the lad you mentioned didn't get the beer joke, at least he is keen on Geology! Maybe you can invite him into this group at some point, lol?
Mark.

Subject: [Geology2] slang and my degree ceremony
Mark a better version is "totally knackered". Bit like me really. Friday was my degree ceremony. Presentation was made by Lord Putnam (Chariots of fire etc) at the Barbican in London. Fantastic day for me and the hundreds of other grads. Had my family there and afterwards took them out for a pub carvery in Essex. Almost tempted to carry on and do oceanography and Global warming but do not think the brain could cope with it
I do some work with a primary school science/maths class. Year 6. In UK that is the final year before they go on to high school. One young lad is a keen geologist. I had to tell him what buttes and messa were. Told him that I thought Butte was an Americanism and most examples captured in pictures etc were in the States. Perfect examples of them and plateaus were in Utah Monument valley. I explained what the features were and how mesa became worn into Buttes. Then he asked me where the asteroid belt was. He thought it was next to the earth. I assured him that it was not and was further out in space and I would bring him in a book I have with its location explained
Btw I tried to joke with him and tell him Butte was Australian for a great beer but he did not get it. 10/11 year olds do not really get jokes like that

Lol, yes the English language can get confusing! I don't envy foreign people trying to learn it.
My 'end' is England (and to coin an English expression, I was 'knackered' when I sent the e-mail, lol).

Since Lin was an Ingrish Prof: They're there until theirs are not.
(Which end was that anyway?)
Rick
P.S. That should have said 'there' shall be many takers. (It's late at my end as I type this, lol).
