Dear Fellow Parents,
Thank you for your active involvement in your child's education. We know that some of you may be unable to come to our VVHS Parent Advisory meetings but are still interested in being involved. We currently have an average of six parents who attend these monthly meetings. These parents are busy like you. Some work outside the home, some have small children, and most have children involved in other school activities (which they support in various capacities). Parental involvement is a key component in the success of our school. There are many ways for you to help
First and foremost, if you have not yet become a member, your financial contribution will help us pay for the various programs we've been providing: Refreshments at the Academic Letter Ceremony, Awards for the Top 10 Banquet, Teacher/Staff appreciation events, Senior Art Award, Lunch for the Best Buddies club twice a year, items for the Hawk Clothing Bank that provides for needy students. Financial contributions may be sent to: VVHS Parent Advisory, 8100 Rainbow Blvd. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87114.
One event that we need help with is the Top Ten Dinner, which will take place April 8, 2013. This event recognizes ten students from each of the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes whose cumulative grade point average ranks them at the top of their respective classes. This year we are seeking parents who can coordinate (or co-coordinate) this event. The event is held at the school. Details to plan include: Getting a caterer for the dinner, sending out invitations to students/families and staff members, decorating the tables, and working with the board to get a speaker. Preparations for this event should begin sometime in January, so it's important that we get help soon.
Other ways to help include donating items for Staff Appreciation events (needs will be listed on List-serve e-mails); giving monetary or clothing donations to the Hawk's Closet (VVHS clothing bank project for needy students), which is in the final stages of getting up and running.
As we look ahead to next year, there is something else we'd like you to consider. At the end of the 2012-2013 school year, we will be losing three Parent Advisory Board membersPresident, Vice President, and Treasurer. Please consider one of these leadership positions for the 2013-2014 school year, and let your voice be heard! The Parent Advisory meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 12 PM in the Main Office Conference Room. Our next meeting is this Thursday, January 10, 2013.
We know that schedules are busy, and that life in general (especially with kids!) can be unpredictable. Thank you again for understanding the importance of parent involvement at the high school level and for supporting your kids and our school at whatever capacity you are able.
Sincerely,
Shannon Steckbeck, Parent Advisory Member
