[Volcano_Vista_HS] VVHS Announcements--Friday, January 11, 2013



If you would like to be part of this year's all school musical, Annie Get Your Gun, and you didn't audition for a major role, you can still be part of this very exciting musical.  On Monday, 14 January starting at 4:00pm in the Theatre, you can come and join the chorus.  Please be prompt as there is a great deal to do.  This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who would like to be part of this year's musical.  If you have any questions, please see Mr. Finn in room J 122.  Remember, "There's no business like show business.

Club pictures will be taken next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during lunch in B154. See your sponsor for your time. Schedules are also posted outside of the activities office.

MESA, the math and science club will have group pictures Monday at lunch. Please wear your MESA t-shirts and meet at the beginning of lunch in the hallway of the ROTC rooms.

Math Honor Society will have group pictures Monday at lunch. Please dress appropriately and meet at the beginning of lunch in the hallway of the ROTC rooms.

Best Buds will meet on Friday during lunch to discuss important upcoming dates and events. We look forward to seeing you there!

Art Club picture taking Mon, Jan 14 at the end of lunch  (11:37) in the ROTC room. Wear your t-shirts.

ACADEMIC DECATHLON we have our team photos on Monday at lunch at 11:30 in B154--please plan to be there! See Mrs. Taylor for more details.

STUDENT AMBASSADORS FROM MRS. WELLS' and MRS. JONES' GROUPS:  Meet on Wednesday, Jan 16th, in E203 at the beginning of lunch for pizza and dessert. After we eat, we will head down to the Gym for our Yearbook photo with the other Student Ambassador groups at 11:35.

HONOR SOCIETY: Our Monday January 14 meeting will be our group photo for the Yearbook. Be at the ROTC room at the side of the Gym by 11:15. Please wear blue, white or yellow (the NHS colors) if possible. See you Monday, and be sure to sign in.

The Freshmen Forum will have a meeting on Monday, January 14th at lunch in room F111. Bring fresh ideas and a package of Swedish Fish. See you then!

Seniors: Stop by the activities office to pick up a nomination form for the class of 2013's Senior Superlatives. Nominations will be taken all week and you will vote next Wednesday during Advisory when you will also have your class picture taken in the gym.

Juniors and Seniors - UNM is hosting their Annual African American Student Day on Friday, March 1st from 8 am to 1:15 pm. Transportation will be provided.  To sign up see Mrs. Sandy in room E224.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

  • ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships. Named for the first African American to walk in space, ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships are available to 2013 graduating high school seniors in school districts represented by the Council of the Great City Schools. Four scholarships for two males and two females--$5,000 each--will be awarded to two African American and two Hispanic students on behalf of the former NASA astronaut, physician and businessman, Dr. Bernard Harris. Deadline for submissions is April 2, 2013.
  • Best Buy is awarding scholarships to students in grades 9-12 who demonstrate good grades, commitment to community service, and/or work experience. Apply online at http://pr.bby.com. The application deadline is February 15.
  • Seniors the deadline to submit scholarship applications for the NMAA Foundation is February 1, 2013.  The scholarships are awarded at the state basketball tournament in March. Any senior involved in athletics and/or NMAA sponsored activities is eligible. For more information go to the NM Activities Association website at NMACT.org.

We're very excited to announce an upcoming Perry Outreach Program on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the University of New Mexico. The Perry Outreach Program is a free, one-day, hands-on experience for high school women, grades 10 and up, who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine and engineering. Students will hear from women leaders in these fields and try it for themselves by performing mock orthopedic surgeries and biomechanics experiments. The online application can be found at www.perryinitiative.org. The application deadline is February 1st! Please see Mrs. Sandy in Rm E224 for further information.

On January 12th thru February 19th at the Open Space Visitor Center at 6500 Coors our Volcano Vista art students will be having a multi-media art show. Stop by for the opening ceremony on Saturday at 3pm.

THERE WILL BE A FILM CLUB MEETING TODAY AT LUNCH IN G184.

Attention Hawks and Hawk Teachers, remember to keep your SOAR cards handy!  SOAR cards can be used to purchase items in the SOAR store on Fridays near the DECA Bar.  Even if you buy an item with a SOAR card, you will still be entered in the drawing to win some sweet prizes!  The SOAR Store will be closed on 1/11, however, it will reopen on 1/18 - we look forward to seeing you there.

Attention all DECA Students. Due to a change in the testing schedule at UNM, our buses will leave on Jan. 15th no later than 7:10am. Please make sure you check-in with Mr. Colburn in the A-Hall near the gym between 6:45 and 7:05 AM on Tuesday the 15th in order to get your credentials and board the bus on time.  Our buses will be in the bus parking area and will leave at 7:10AM - Please don't miss it!

ECademy Registration will be ongoing until January 17th, 2013.  If you need to make up a class, bring $15 cash, registration fee to your Academy Counselor, and they will review with you options to make up credits.

ATHLETICS:

  • Attention all males at the school. There will be a Track and Field informational meeting Tuesday at lunch in the gym. The meeting will start promptly at 11:15. Stop by Coach Gilmore's room F212 for more information on preseason practice opportunities. The season officially beings Monday, February 11th at 2:40 sharp. Make sure you have a physical completed and turned in by that date.
  • Girls interested in being part of the track and field team- see Coach Schrader in H108 for information.  The season begins Feb. 11th!
  • All girls interested in playing softball:  There will be a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 15th, at 11:15 in the main gym. BE THERE
  • The Boys Basketball will play in the semi finals of the APS Metro Tournament tonight at 7pm at West Mesa High School.
  • The Girls will also play in the semi finals against Eldorado at 5:30 at Valley High School on Friday night.
  • The Finals will be played at West Mesa on Saturday. NOTE: The boys lost to La Cueva tonight and will play Sandia at 1 PM for 3rd place. The girls beat Eldorado tonight and will play La Cueva for the championship at 7 PM.
