A red-flag warning will remain in effect for Orange County until 8 p.m. Thursday, but hot Santa Ana winds are expected to diminish late Thursday and into Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning has been in place since early Wednesday because of high winds, hot temperatures and dry conditions that make the county ripe for brush fires.

No fires or significant wind damage were reported Thursday morning.

However, that wasn't the case Wednesday, when Orange County Fire Authority personnel responded to at least 26 fires, including seven vegetation fires, five structure fires, four trash fires, four tree fires, five brush fires, and one equipment vault fire.

Many of the fires were sparked by falling power lines or lines struck by trees, OCFA Capt. Steve Concialdi said.

High winds also caused tree limbs and debris to fall on power lines, resulting in scattered outages across the county.

A high-wind warning will remain in effect until 5 p.m. Thursday. It will be sunny throughout the day with highs ranging from 86 to 91 degrees near the coast, according to the Weather Service. Winds will be from the northeast at 15 mph to 25 mph and will increase to 40 mph in the afternoon.

It will be mostly clear Thursday night with lows of 55 degrees to 63 degrees.

Friday is expected to be mostly sunny with highs of 80 degrees to 85 degrees near the coast to 86 degrees to 91 degrees inland. There will also be light winds. A cooling trend will begin Saturday.

Although winds will die down Thursday night and into Friday, temperatures will remain warm, according to the Weather Service.
