On my third lesson, the plane suffered a separated head (one of two,
Cessna 150), shortly after takeoff (just clear of the pattern). There
was not enough power to continue, but there was enough to get back to
the field. High vibration, low power, sounded like crap, losing oil.
In my case, it was bay, freeway or attempt return.
Apparently there was enough engine function in this case that he thought
it was possible for a return. But either way, he did a wonderful job,
no deaths, no major damage (except the plane sadly) and he didn't have
to wait for a doctor. From the aerial view, he crashed short of the
runway, positioned on close left downwind (another few hundred yards and
30 degree turn, he'd have been on the field, which would have closed it).
My only concern would have been that those immediately on scene (the
doctors and others that ran over) were not trained in extrication, which
may have exacerbated the injuries by moving him. I say this because
most doctors in the ER receive 'packaged' patients and are told the
conditions surrounding the incident; they generally don't get field
time. The best ones manage to get out in the field for a reality check.
But it appears that everything went well and I wish him a speedy recovery.
