Temperatures hit 121° F in Thermal, 118° F in Borrego Springs, 113° F in Brea, 110° F in Riverside and Ontario, and 101° in Julian.
The low temperature was 93° F in Palm Springs on 8.5.
Five deaths were attributed to this heat wave.

The year 1961 holds the distinction of having the most daily precipitation records in the month of August in Bakersfield with 4 such records still in the books.

Flash floods washed out a road and caused minor slides around Barton Flats.
In Needles, flash floods washed out Highway 66 and damaged railroads.
100 people were made homeless as many washes turned into raging torrents.
