[Geology2] The Moyeni tracksite in Lesotho, southern Africa
The Moyeni tracksite in Lesotho, southern Africa
The footprints recorded at the tracksite were made over the course of weeks approximately 200 million years ago, in the early part of the Jurassic Period. The tracksite preserves a variety of four-legged animals crossing an ancient point bar. The bar includes an algal matted top (right), a gently inclined slope (middle) and a rippled riverbed surface (left). The dinosaurs crossing the ancient point bar responded to the differences in substrate in real time, and their tracks provide insights into early dinosaur locomotion.
