RE: [californiadisasters] Travel emergency kits

One of the simplest, but probably somewhat unusual, ideas I came up with, probably because of the “diagnose-problem/solve-problem” mental processes I use constantly in my work, is this:

I recommend travelers carry a universal bathtub stopper.  It is the kind that not only has the extra wide diameter over-flap, but also the rubber sleeve that fits down into the drain pipe.  I’ve known too many people who found themselves more or less trapped on high floors in hotels, with maybe a rental car in a subterranean parking lot, when something happened.  Smart ones using this device MAY be able to pull out the removable metal closure, which typically leaks, drop in the universal, and draw some water in the tub before pressure is totally lost.  No guarantee this will always work, but the item is cheap, light, space conscious, and presumably non-threatening to TSA folks.  More importantly, water can end up being a critical life safety matter, particularly in highly urbanized environments.  Plus, hotel rooms can get hot very quickly when there is no power or air circulation.

This also is something that might have helped a woman from our area.  She essentially fled into lockdown in her hotel room (high up) when terrorists attacked her hotel in Mumbai.  If I remember right, the water service was okay for a while, but then all power was lost as well for a number of hours.  Had she drawn water and been able to keep it, she could have lasted longer if doing so had been needed.  As it was, they were eventually escorted out, passing by the bloody scenes, before the water situation reached critical.

If a person wanted to take an "emergency kit" on a plane, what could you bring and still have a decent kit?

Sure does. I just focused on California as that is the group topic. Normally when I am out of state, which is quite often on business, I carry a severely reduced set of essentials - personal medications - prescribed and OTC, small food items, liquids, small trash bag and zip lock bags, small towel, windbreaker, an AM/FM/SW radio or Marine radio with weather band, and an amateur radio hand held. This is because modern air travel restricts what can be carried on the plane - either by TSA rule or airline baggage fees.  I also carry a set of tools as checked luggage as a part of my work.

My opinions still stand as to what I would carry in the trunk of my car as the basics no matter where I am.

This is California and calamity does happen where one has to expect to be somewhat independent (off-the-grid) for short periods of time.

Such things never happen outside the Republic of CA?
