California is in the middle of a whooping cough epidemic, with rates of the infectious disease at least four times the norm for this time of year. Public health officials are asking that all adults, especially those who have contact with newborns, get the vaccine for whooping cough, also known as pertussis. Dr. Susan Fernyak, director of communicable disease control and prevention at the
San Francisco Department of Public Health, talked with Chronicle reporter Erin Allday about the epidemic.
