Carjack/OIS suspect barricaded in East Hemet

EAST HEMET, Calif. (KABC) -- Hemet Police and Riverside County Sheriff's deputies surrounded a barricaded suspect in East Hemet Wednesday afternoon.

The suspect is wanted for attempting to carjack a Postal Service vehicle Tuesday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Dept. During that incident, the suspect allegedly exchanged gunfire with California Highway Patrol officers, then escaped.

Authorities located the suspect Wednesday in a apartment building, and had the location surrounded, near Florida and New Chicago avenues in East Hemet, about 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Gunshots were reportedly fired Wednesday.

A SWAT team was called to the scene.
