Moderator's Note: I received a message from our principal, Yvonne Garcia, telling me of the lack of school supplies being donated to the KOAT (channel 7) School Supply Drive. Because of the small number of donations, Volcano Vista's neediest students WILL NOT benefit from the program this year. We therefore are asking our community for some help.
If every parent on this list could send at least one item to school (college ruled paper, spiral notebooks, a package of pens, markers/colored pencils, or pencils, or a 3-ring binder, a gently used or new backpack) we could help out those students who do not have such resources.
Please bring in such items to the main office marked to Trish Mertens (a school counselor). Thank you so much for your care and consideration!
Here's the letter our principal received...
I was just at KOAT to help with the sorting and left after a few minutes having done none because there were no more supplies to sort. By our and KOAT's estimate, between 5% and 10% the number of supplies that were donated last year were donated this year. Because of the low amount of donations, not every school will be receiving supplies and those that do will be getting a box of paper, pencils, markers, binders, etc. to distribute as they see fit. We apologize and we aware that this year when we have less to distribute there will be much greater need. KOAT has extended the drive to this Friday and hopefully more will be coming in, but I cannot imagine that it will be much more.
I am very sorry that it turned out this way and I know that your community needs these resources. Maybe we can figure out a way to get more support from the greater community next year.
