Weather Service deems Oxnard 'tsunami ready'
KABC-TV Los AngelesWednesday, September 14, 2011
OXNARD, Calif. (KABC) -- Oxnard, the largest city in Ventura County, is officially prepared for a tsunami.
The National Weather Service says Oxnard has met its TsunamiReady Program criteria for disaster planning.
More than 80 coastal communities nationwide have become "tsunami ready" since 2004. Nine of them are in the Los Angeles area.
To be given the "tsunami ready" designation, a community must have a 24-hour center for receiving Weather Service warnings and activating local warning systems.
It must have multiple methods for warning the public.
It must promote readiness instruction.
And it must develop a formal tsunami plan that includes emergency exercises.
