RE: [Geology2] slang and my degree ceremony

Quite a few expression cross ‘the puddle’.  I’ve used several over the years; ‘bloody awful’ or ‘bleeding idiot’ being common ones or ‘bloody wanker’ when I’m hauling the RV and can’t cuss because of proximity of others with tender ears.

I may not use them with the proper local vernacular, but the point gets across.  My brother kept hearing “sidewalk” from our parents and ‘path’ from our gran when he was very young; so he used ‘sidepath’.

While we’re so far off topic; we do have fewer accents here because we share fewer languages than the Empire.  Suthrun (Southern dialects) is actually a derivation of the King’s English (aristocratic, circa 17th century) without the constant influence of ‘the old country’.  A sharp ear can tell what state the speaker ‘hails from’.  But in our current mobile society (constant moving about), it’s getting to be much more difficult (accents change after the speaker spends time in a different place).  A couple years ago, I heard a pure untainted ‘Midwest’ accent (Ohio).  It was subtle but a treat for me (she was just barely 90 and rarely left the state).

I try to listen and generally within a few days can manage to sound like a ‘local’.  That trip to Canada really drove my ex nuts, eh?

Yeah 'totally knackered' is an expression I have also used and often it describes me too, lol.
