RE: [californiadisasters] Re: FW: MD Fire Dept Training Newsletter - PLEASE READ!!!!

And I don’t like

the color (most aren’t the same Kelvin range as incandescent) or

the flicker (even the new ones flicker some, it bothers my eyes) or

the fact that a nanny state attitude is forcing me to do something that I may or may not wish to do.

If I’m paying my energy bill (be it diesel, gasoline, propane or electricity), how I choose to use it (or not) is MY decision.  If I choose gas lighting; it’s nobody else’s busy-ness; bugger off.

I’m also NOT going to a recycling center just to throw away the CFL bulbs when they die (polluting the landfill).  If nanny really wants us to go greener, lower the cost of LED bulbs (currently $30-200 per bulb).  They’re clean, green and available in a much wider Kelvin spectrum.  They use much less energy than a CFL and don’t pollute when tossed (they’re plastic and a grain of sand).

Side note:  CFL and LED power systems, regardless of 12v or 120v frequently make radio (RF) noise.  While this may not be obvious to a homeowner, to anyone wanting to listen to a radio it’s like trying to hear an AM station in your car through a lightning storm in the middle of a cat fight.  If manufacturers want clean and green, then be clean and green to the radio environment too.

Thanks for the post and happy to see the update also. I still have concerns about these new bulbs. I would love to cut my electric bill but have have not used these bulbs yet due to many conflicting anecdotes that I have heard about fire hazards. One hears that hey should not be used in base down fixtures or base up fixtures, or sideways fixtures....

Also one sometimes hears stories about differing brands having differing fire safety issues. Most I have seen seem to be manufactured in China and I have some concerns of the quality control of items made in China. I also have some doubt about some of the government and NGO websites which discuss the issue as there seems to be an organizational push for "greenness".

I live alone but often leave small lights on at night so I can find the bathroom without breaking my neck and so that the cats will find the sandbox. My home has high ceilings and in addition to the cost savings would love to use bulbs that last longer to reduce the number of times I have to climb a ladder to change them.

If anyone knows of a reliable source of information please post it here or in discussion.

Cheers
