Indeed it did, Allison. 1969 to be exact. Let's not overlook, either, the shipboard romance between a swarthy captain and his wench/mistress. The special effects resemble something made via Claymation and are like what we all ooo'ed and aww'ed over when we were kids. However, even then, one could easily see that those same effects were constantly recycled. It really blew the word, "hokey" apart. lol
Some trivia: Amboy crater in the Mojave Desert, SoCal is shown briefly in the first "Journey to the Center of the Earth" flick. I'll have to make some screen caps and post them.

Didn't Krakatoa come out in the sixties? I remember being about 7 or 8 and watching the special effects of the volcano blowing up.. wow. Back then it was amazing to me. But that was a preview only... I forget why but we were not able to go back and see it. I will have to be on the lookout now for it. But of course without the big screen in a dark theater it will lose something. But hey any movie featuring pink octopuses has got to be entertaining. Allison

Hi Vic,I actually collect these movies. I call it my "Stupid Geo-Movies" collection and I'm still looking for the worst of the worst. So far, "Krakatoa, East of Java," ranks #1, although the Italian made "Stromboli" comes in as a close second. In the former, Brian Keith hallucinates pink octopuses and forgets that Krakatoa is actually west of Java. In the latter, Ingrid Bergman, in an emotional reaction to her pent-up feelings, takes a mad climb up the volcano amidst outgassing and a minor eruption-all done in heels. Let's not forget that both the "Journey to the Center of the Earth" movies are way beyond incredible to the point of laughable.
Anyone here have a favorite really awful geo-movie? I'm looking for anything that I might have missed. :-)

I watched "The Core" last night. Another unimaginative update on
"Journey to the Center of the Earth," this time with nuclear explosions
to restart the stalled spinning of the outer core. Really awful. The
only saving graces were some fairly decent special effects and Hilary
Swank as the pilot of the truly unbelievable earth-boring machine.
It's currently on demand from Comcast, but I wouldn't recommend it.
