The warning is in effect for most of Los Angeles County. Expect high fire danger in the Santa Clarita and San Fernando valleys until at least Tuesday night. The red flag warning went into effect at 4 a.m. and was to remain in effect until 6 p.m., according to the weather service.
Sustained winds of 20-30 mph were forecast with gusts up to 50 mph, forecasters said. In Fontana, wind knocked over trash bins, toppled portable toilets and scattered items at construction sites.
"It is going to be a very windy day, a very dry day," said NBC4 forecaster Crystal Egger.
Relative humidity in the single digits and temperatures reaching the upper 70s were also forecast for today.
"A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create extreme fire (danger)," according to an NWS statement.
The Los Angeles Fire Department planned to preposition resources beginning at 8 a.m. today at stations serving high hazard brush area, said the department's Erik Scott.
A red flag warning indicates critical fire weather conditions because of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures. The conditions could lead to rapid spread of wildfire.Check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/californiadisasters/
