Very costly in terms of energy

There are a couple being worked on along the coast - Carlsbad is one opening in 2016 - here is a good article on current progress

There's a pilot plant that did some research in Long Beach in conjunction with energy production since the temp of the water is already raised some -  http://www.lbwater.org/long-beach-seawater-desalination - it closed after the federal funding for the research ended - here's a current news story on that
