A significant amount of the seismicity in Northern Europe is the result of isostatic rebound of the lithosphere as a result of the rapid retreat of the ice sheet over 10,000 years ago. In some areas there is still well over 100 feet (or 100's as I have heard from once source) of rebound still to go.
