(GMT) Greenwich Mean Time - Dublin / Edinburgh / Lisbon / London
Where
Northern California
Notes
On this date in 1997 following weeks of heavy precipitation and in particular several days of heavy snows in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and elsewhere, a Pineapple Express weather pattern formed and aimed at Northern California dumping prodigious amounts of rain which in their own right were significant. However, these warm sub-tropical rains which fell up to the 11,000 foot elevation also melted much of the snow pack which resulted in severe flooding across many parts of the North State and a few places in Central California. Especially hard hit were the San Joaquin River Basin (particularly the Consumnes River), the Sacramento River Basin (particularly the Feather River), and the Klammath River Basin where in some places the Klammath River changed its course. Also hard hit was the Merced River which flooded Yosemite Valley for the first time since the mid-1800's notably just over the state line the Walker River washed out US395 and flooded downtown Reno, NV. There were numerous levee failures in areas of Sacramento, San Joaquin and Stanislaus County where at one point Interstate-5 was under water in San Joaquin County and Highway 99 was under water in Tulare County and in El Dorado County US50 was closed for many weeks due to numerous large landslides. This flood episode resulted in 23,000 structures being damaged along with damage to infrastructure and agriculture. Damage totals reached about $2 billions. Nine people were killed and 120,000 were evacuated.
