Re: [Geology2] Rare earths discovered in Peru



An example would be the element irridium or ytterbium or neodidium.  It is a long technical discussion of weird names which I can't spell --so best read from the wikipedia article in the link below. It is beneficial to understand why REE--Rare Earth Elements are so important to the world. ( lasers, cell phones, magnets (as in neodidium. ) ) China has most of the worlds supply: They even bought the only REE mine in the US --approved by the Obama mis-administration-- and they have restricted export to countries in the west and Japan that they have a beef with.  <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rare_earth_element>  Most REE were originally discovered in a Swedish mining complex which has long been closed.
