The Seismo Lab depicted (old, crowded & with chandeliers) is a good depiction of the "Donnelly" location in the San Rafael Hills, where Caltech's Seismo Lab was before it moved onto campus.
Also, it was one of the first movies to deal with the idea of scientific earthquake prediction. The scientists were worried but didn't really know what was going on or what exactly to predict.
On it's first run, theaters were equipped with sub-bass "Sensurround" speakers to enhance the sound effects.
Yes, the plot was a little "cheesy," but who goes to a disaster movie for the plot?

Yes, it felt like half the movie was spent developing the characters and there was plenty of '70s schlock but that was how movies were made then and was unavoidable....
