Deer Fire: Evacuations recommended for Bear Valley Springs
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Bear Valley Springs is under a recommended evacuation for the what the Kern County Fire Department is calling the Deer Fire.
The Fire Department says 80-100 homes are threatened by the brush fire, which is now reportedly burning 1,200 acres.
The Fire Department gave these details for the evacuations: north boundary at Medicine Bow, west boundary at the end of Deer Trail with the cross of Derrick Court, south boundary at Greenwater Drive, and the east boundary at Territory and Jack Arranda.
Jacobsen Middle School in Tehachapi is serving as an evacuation center, according to the Fire Department.
A portion of Highway 223 is also closed while the Fire Department attacks the fire, moving uphill in the direction of Bear Valley Springs.
Fire Capt. Tyler Townsend said large, dead trees on the ridge line are posing a considerable risk. The fire has spread through waist-high brush, he said.
Air resources are assisting ground crews in fighting the fire.
The fire started Friday afternoon in the area of Deer Trail and Hwy. 223, according to the Fire Department.
