Wildfire threatening homes near Round Mountain
Fire crews are fighting a wildfire along Highway 299 this afternoon near Round Mountain that is threatening homes.
As the fire, which was reported at 1:30 p.m., spread to 30 acres at 2:30 p.m., fire crews called for the help of two more air tankers, said Linda Galvan, spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Three air tankers were already buzzing the fire and dropping fire retardant.
The fire had spread to about 10 acres in 40 minutes since it was reported at 1:30 p.m., Cal Fire dispatchers said at 2:10 p.m.
At 2:15 p.m. the fire's incident commander called for help from the Shasta County Sheriff's Office with possible evacuations, a Cal Fire dispatcher said. Galvan said no evacuations were underway at 2:30 p.m.
The fire was burning close to Buzzard Roost Road on the north side of Highway 299, said Justin Smith, a Cal Fire spokesman. He said the fire threatened high tension power lines as well as homes although he didn't know how many.
Along with the five air tankers, seven fire engines, four hand crews, three water tenders and a helicopter were fighting the fire, Galvan said. She said roads winding around where the fire is burning could help stop its spread.
"There are roads all around there," Galvan said.
Galvan said cause of the blaze is under investigation.
On Aug. 20, 1992, the monstrous Fountain Fire started near Buzzard Roost Road and went on to burn 64,000 acres – almost 100 square miles of forest – and level 300 homes.
