Dear Hardin, The 2010 Great California ShakeOut on October 21 is now less than two months away, and already more than 5.2 million Californians are registered to participate. In 2009 this milestone was not reached until late September!
To make sure if you are listed as a participant for 2010, you can visit www.ShakeOut.org/whoisparticipating to view lists of participants by county or for the entire state. If you or your organization is not listed for 2010, please login today to easily update your information and confirm your participation in this year's drill.
Set a reminder! An easy way to know when on October 21st to Drop, Cover, and Hold On is to set an alarm on your phone or computer calendar for 10:21 a.m.! Your organization may also use a more widespread alarm or announcement, but your own alarm will help make sure you join the millions of others who are practicing how to protect themselves.
T-shirts, "2010 Participant" stickers, buttons, mugs, and more... The new ShakeOut Shop has been created as a service to ShakeOut participants who are requesting items to commemorate their drills, spread preparedness messages, and encourage others to participate. Proceeds from each sale go to support increasing preparedness and participation in the ShakeOut. In addition, your organization can become a ShakeOutShop Affiliate, and receive 10% of every purchase made by people who click a special link on your site. This can be a great fundraiser for schools and other groups!
Prepare, Protect, and Recover! The ShakeOut is an opportunity for us to prepare together, before a major earthquake happens again in California. To help, we are sending you preparedness tips each month, following the Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety: Step 7: Communicate and Recover! Following a major disaster, communication will be an important step in your recover efforts. Turn on your portable radio for information and safety advisories. If your home is damaged and you have earthquake insurance, contact your insurance agent right away to begin your claims process (your homeowner's insurance policy does not cover damage from earthquakes!) The webpage for this step has basic instructions what to do in the days and weeks after a major earthquake and what to do if you must go to a shelter.
Who will ShakeOut with you? A great way to help your friends, relatives, community, employer, and others get prepared is to encourage them to register to participate in the ShakeOut! Let them know you are participating and ask them to join you. You can also display posters, distribute flyers, and use other materials available on the ShakeOut Resources page.
We're all in this together... The ShakeOut has grown because of people like you, who see the value of practicing how to protect ourselves and for getting prepared. We have formed the Earthquake Country Alliance to foster an earthquake and tsunami resilient California. If you have similar commitments please join the Alliance.
Thank you for your participation and commitment to earthquake safety!
