Re: [californiadisasters] Re: Deaths confirmed as huge quake hits...

Exactly right, Louis. Yes, Kathy, I agree. We know this from even "little"
incidents like, say, a major brush fire.

I was noting the issue, but without meaning to imply judgment. Just that
from 65 to 32 was a radical jump in the opposite-of-expected direction.

Why, Kathy, are people anxious for numbers? A couple of reasons, I think.
The valid (IMO) reasons include:

1. A desire to get some kind of comprehension of the situation. ("20 dead is
twice as bad an incident as 10 dead," even though that's seldom strictly
true.)

2. A feeling of empathy/grief/helplessness. "I can't DO anything, but if I
at least have some information."

And yes, Louis, the place is indeed a mess. When you see cars settled into
liquefaction, or crushed flat by collapsed buildings, streets with cracks
running everywhere, every few feet, buildings like the PGG which Tuesday
morning (their time) looked like fine, modern buildings, it's not reasonable
to expect the news reports (or the officials) to get everything right the
first time.
