Hands Only CPR Challange
Written by Tracy Lehr | KEYT-TV Santa Barbara Santa Barbara City Fire, AMR, and the county's EMS Agency Kicked off a campaign to save lives today.
Paramedics say 300 people die of cardiac arrest each year in Santa Barbara County and only a fraction are saved by CPR.
So they are challenging businesses to sign up for a free public health pilot program that will be teaching hands only CPR through June.
At the Paseo Nuevo Center Court today politicians, doctors and first responders told their own stories.
Janet Wolf survived a heart attack before she joined the board of supervisors.
Now she talks to women about getting help and and learning new methods.
The newest method is called "Hands Only CPR."
Rather than mouth to mouth resuscitation paramedics say you should 1) Check for responsiveness: Shake & Shout. Rub the breastbone with your knuckles.
2) Call 9-1-1 or tell someone to do so. 3) Compress: position on the floor face up. Place one hand on the center of the chest and the other hand on top of the first. Push hard (at least two inches) and Fast (100/minute) 4) Continue until EMS arrives.
And note that gasping is a sign you are doing it right.
