[californiadisasters] On This Date In CA Weather History (March 17)
2012: A tornado was photographed near Tranquility (in rural Fresno County, about 30 miles west-southwest of Fresno) during the afternoon;
there was convection that developed over much of Fresno County due to plenty of cold air aloft.
The tornado did not cause any known damage as it moved mainly over farmland.
There were also reports of wind damage during the early morning hours in the north side of Clovis;
wind gusts were estimated around 50-60 mph in this area as several trees (including redwood and eucalyptus) were uprooted.
In addition, record daily rainfall occurred in many San Joaquin Valley locations.
2012: A heavy snowstorm dumped deep snow in the mountains starting on this day and ending on 3/17.
Ski resorts, Arrowbear Lake, and the top of the Palm Springs Tramway reported over two feet of snow.
15" fell at Big Bear Lake, 14" in Mt. Laguna, up to 13" in Wrightwood, 11" in Pine Cove, and 10" in Forest Falls and Idyllwild.
A trace of snow fell as low as 1500 feet in Hemet.
Numerous traffic accidents on the snowy and icy highways resulted.
1991: A dust storm generated by gusty southeast winds caused two separate pile-ups involving a total of 27 vehicles near Bakersfield.
Twenty people were injured. In nearby Taft, a F0 tornado lasted for about 750 feet on the ground and damaged minor structures and tore the roofs on some houses.
1991: A vigorous storm that started on this day and ended on 3.20 produced one to eight inches of rainfall in lower elevations and up to 14" of precipitation in the mountains.
During the period, 6.17" fell at Mt. Wilson and 4" fell in Santa Barbara.
24"-60" of snow fell in the mountains.
Local flooding and mud slides resulted.
1982: 12" of snow fell at Portola.
1982: A storm that started on 3.16 and ended on 3.18 produced 2"-4" of rain in San Diego County.
Local flooding closed many streets.
On this day a tornado was reported at San Diego - Lindbergh Field.
2.13" of rain fell in 24 hours in Pt. Loma on this day and on 3.18.
1972: Fresno had its earliest 90°+ day; also the warmest day in March at Fresno.
1968: 18" of snow fell at Donner Memorial State Park.
1938: The morning low at Boca was -13°.
1922: St. Patrick's Day snowfall in Bakersfield, 2.5" fell.
